Butler County- Last ATRIP Project Completed

Butler County has completed its last remaining project from the Alabama Transportation Rehabilitation and Improvement Program. The project was delayed due to funding shortfalls and was completed utilizing Federal-Aid funding . The project consisted of widening, leveling, and resurfacing 9.385 miles of County Road 7, beginning at Alabama State Route 10 and heading north to the County Line.

Elmore County- Milling and Resurfacing on Coosada Parkway

Elmore County has started phase 1 of a 2 phase project. On Coosada Pkwy, the County has a milling contractor removing the 1” wearing surface with the County retaining 100% of the millings. The County plans to utilize the millings by basing dirt roads and repairing shoulder drop offs on the County’s 1,000 mile roadway system. Phase 2 will consist of a paving contractor placing an 1.5” wearing surface and new thermoplastic traffic stripe in the upcoming weeks.

Smith Lake Park Improvements in Cullman County

Cullman County recently completed improvements to Smith Lake Park.  County forces competed the earthwork and paving at the boat ramp in a project that included a partnership with the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.  the project was completed by applying a fog seal over the existing asphalt surface that remained.  The park documented this work using their drone and the video of the project is provided below.

New Bridge in Marshall County includes Geosynthetic Reinforced Soil (GRS) Abutments

Marshall County recently constructed a new bridge on Cochran Road over Turkey Creek utilizing Geosynthetic Reinforced Soil (GRS) abutments and an Integrated Bridge System (IBS).  GRS consists of closely spaced layers of geosynthetic fabric and compacted granular fill that serves as the bridge abutment.  IBS consists of an encapsulated granular fill roadway that is blended into the superstructure eliminating open bridge end joints.  The existing bridge shown below consisted of weathered sandstone abutments and rusted steel beam girders.  The bridge was removed ...

ATRIP Success – Morgan County

Morgan County recently replaced two bridges totaling $5.3M of improvements funded through the ATRIP program.  The first project was to replace a 300′ concrete and steel bridge with a 340′ ASASHTO girder bridge on Danville Road.  This structure serves approximately 3,500 vehicles per day.

ATRIP Success -Lauderdale County

Lauderdale County has recently completed ATRIP-funded road and bridge improvement projects and County Engineer Eric Hill noted the project successes at the ACCA Legislative Conference.  ATRIP funded 14 projects in Lauderdale County totaling just over $9M in improvements.  Projects completed included 12 bridge/culvert replacements, 1 bridge rehabilitation, and 1 road paving project.

ATRIP Success – Cullman County

Cullman County has recently completed their ATRIP-funded road improvement projects and County Engineer John Lang shared the recent project successes at the 2017 ACCA Legislative Conference.  With an annual budget of approximately $8M, ATRIP funding provided the equivalent of 17 years of federal aid with a total of nearly $34M in projects completed.  Cullman County completed 62 miles of road resurfacing and partnered with the City of Cullman and ALDOT to complete an Interstate 65 Interchange at County Road 222 ...

Elmore County – Ingram Road Bridge Culvert Replacement

Two 50+ year-old bridges  were replaced in a 3-month time frame using a unique wing wall design. This project used gabion baskets as wing walls that extended well beyond the culverts tying into natural ground. The gabion baskets provide a space for utilities outside of the construction area and eliminated the necessity to acquire additional right-of-way.
