Marshall County recently constructed a new bridge on Cochran Road over Turkey Creek utilizing Geosynthetic Reinforced Soil (GRS) abutments and an Integrated Bridge System (IBS). GRS consists of closely spaced layers of geosynthetic fabric and compacted granular fill that serves as the bridge abutment. IBS consists of an encapsulated granular fill roadway that is blended into the superstructure eliminating open bridge end joints. The existing bridge shown below consisted of weathered sandstone abutments and rusted steel beam girders. The bridge was removed and replaced with GRS-IBS structure in less than 60 days. For further or more detailed information, please contact County Engineer Bob Pirando.
